Over the last year we’ve been working on how the Dublin Control of Horse Drawn Carriages byelaws and licensing system could be improved so that horse welfare is prioritised.
We’ve had some really great suggestions from a number of experienced carriage drivers and people within the industry, which we’ve collated and are putting forward to Dublin City Council.
To have an even better understanding of carriage driving, we were recently invited by Thomas Clarke Carriages to his yard for an introduction into harnessing, the different types of carriages and carts and their different functions and ways in which horses are trained for driving.
Although we have some differences of opinion on some topics there there is a lot that we do agree on around horse welfare - especially on how proper harnessing ensures the horse is comfortable when working.
We really enjoyed the day and would like to thank Thomas and his family for their time and hospitality.
