Adoption FAQ's and Adoption Form
Why Adopt an Equine From My Lovely Horse Rescue?
By adopting an equine from My Lovely Horse Rescue (MLHR), you are providing them with a future that did not seem possible before they arrived at our door. You are giving them the opportunity to lead a healthy, happy and useful life with you. You are also enabling us to make space for another equine that may be in need of our assistance.
There is no shortage of these welfare cases so adopting one equine is also helping us to rescue another. So you double up on your good deed. Equines available for adoption have been fully vet checked so you will be fully aware of their medical history in the time they have been with us. They will be micro-chipped and have a valid passport.
Most of our equines for adoption will have spent several months with the MLHR team in rehab and training. This will enable us to give you some insight into the personality of the equine you are interested in. Knowing as much as you can about them will allow you to make an informed decision regarding whether or not they might be the best fit for you and vice versa.
All equines remain the property of MLHR. This allows us to guarantee their welfare. It might be comforting to know that should your circumstances change over the life of the animal, the equine can be safely returned to MLHR.
What Should You Consider Before Adopting an Equine?
You should ask yourself what is the intended purpose of the animal you are looking for?
Is it to be a companion animal or is it for riding?
What level of experience will the rider have?
Have you thoroughly investigated the costs associated with keeping an equine? The costs of feed, bedding, vet care, farrier visits, dental checks and insurance are not insignificant and should not be taken lightly.
Have you the time to care for the equine?
Do you have suitable experience in handling and managing equines?
Do you have suitable land and facilities to house the equine?
Is there sufficient acreage for grazing?
What stables or shelter is available?
We will not rehome an equine to a location where there are no other equines. Being social animals they are most comfortable in the company of their own kind.
We do not permit breeding with or from MLHR equines.
What is the Application Process?
Your application will be reviewed by our team and you will be contacted by them in due course. Please remember that this is a mainly volunteer led organisation so our response will not be immediate.
Our team member will discuss your application and answer any questions you may have. We will then ask to be allowed carry out a detailed home check to assess the location where you propose to keep the equine to determine that suitable grazing and stabling/shelter is available. If both parties still wish to proceed we will arrange for you to meet the equine that you are interested in to see if you are a good match for each other.
If you have chosen a riding horse, you will need to have a riding assessment before you can adopt the horse. Should you wish to then adopt the equine you will be asked to enter into a Loan Agreement with MLHR.
The equine will remain the property of MLHR for its life though you will be taking full responsibility for the costs of maintaining its health and welfare. Further visits by a member of the MLHR team will be arranged to monitor the health and welfare of the equine and to see how you are getting along together.
What Are The Immediate Costs Involved if Approved For Adoption?
The costs associated with the collection of the equine from MLHR and transport to your location will be covered by you. All further costs associated with the upkeep and proper care of the equine will be your responsibility.
