MLHR Feline Rehoming Policy
Introduction
The problem of feral and abandoned cats in Ireland is a huge one. Each year we take in increasing numbers of cats. Once we have rehabilitated them we search for homes for them. We make every effort to ensure that the personality and needs of the cat matches that of their adopter.

The problem of feral and abandoned cats in Ireland is a huge one. Each year we take in increasing numbers of cats. Once we have rehabilitated them we search for homes for them. We make every effort to ensure that the personality and needs of the cat matches that of their adopter.
Process
- Every cat or kitten that comes through MLHR is microchipped to the organisation. Once a new owner is found, they can change this to ensure that the cat is microchipped to them;
- We ensure that any veterinary treatment that is needed is carried out.
- We administer flea and worm treatments to the cats/kittens (when old enough)
- If they are over six months, we spay or neuter them. If they are younger then we liaise with their new owner to complete this procedure.
- Vaccinations will be carried out by the adopter
- Every adoption will be preceded by a home check carried out by either a volunteer with MLHR or a staff member
- The following questions will form part of a home check:
- Does the prospective owner have feline experience
- Who else is in their household
- Do they have other pets
- If they have dogs, are the dogs cat friendly
- If the cat is to be allowed outdoors, are they on a busy road
- Does the cat have the option to sleep indoors (we do not rehome to homes where the cats will be outdoors except in exceptional circumstances eg feral cat who will need an outside but owner supervised home.)
- Does the prospective owner have a local vet
- Once approved, the adopter will be notified and will fetch the cat at a time suitable to the adopter and MLHR Cat Team
